Dear Gun Nuts,
Do you know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is? It's where you believe in something is going to happen and you act in way to make it happen even though it is not in your best interests to do so. Like believing that Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress are going to take your guns away. So what do you do? You act in an irresponsible manner, like you totally cannot handle the responsibilities of the rights of gun ownership. You know, like the idiot in Pittsburgh who killed three police officers. He was convinced that his guns (including an AK-47) were going to be confiscated by the federal government. Even though there was no evidence that was going to happen other than the rantings of Glenn Beck and Wayne LaPierre. Or the idiot in Binghampton, NY. And that guy wasn't even a US citizen. Going back to the guy in Knoxville, TN who shot up a church full of Unitarians because he couldn't get access to a famous liberal.

I know you are obsessed about gun rights, but what about the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I know that is not in the Constitution, but it is one of the ideals our country holds dearly. Is a person's life less important than your right to own a gun? What happens when your right to own a gun infringes upon another person's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? The dead cannot exercise their human rights. You say that you need guns for self defense, but your insistence upon packing heat worries the rest of us. What are you so afraid of? The ACLU? Liberals? People of a different race? Women? Children? Shoplifters? Someone with a bigger penis? Does it give you a woody knowing that you are making up for your inadequacies?

If you insist upon being a vigilante, how do we know you know what you are doing? How much training have you had? Do you know the maximum effective range of 9mm Baretta pistol? Can you hit the side of barn if you fire a 9mm pistol 10 feet away from it? Can you throw a 9mm pistol more than 50 meters?

You do realize that when you own a gun, you have the responsibility to ensure that you do not use it to commit a crime. If the mass shootings continue, then it is obvious that Americans cannot handle the responsibilities of Second Amendment rights and the Second Amendment will have to be repealed just like Prohibition was repealed with a Constitutional Amendment.

OMG, Bush is no longer President. I missed the ceremony, I was driving from Florida to my house. But I did listen to it on NPR.

I'm speechless, I never did think that Bush would leave. It's been a very long eight years. Bush is the only President my ten year old son knows. Here's hoping that memories of President Obama will wipe out the bad memories of the last eight years.

Barack Obama is right, John McCaine doesn't get it. He assumes that women are stupid enough to vote for a woman who is all flash and no substance. He thinks of women as objects. Obviously, he does not have a high opinion of women. His tastes run to former beauty queens and models, the first wife was a model and very attractive before she was crippled in a car accident while he was building the basis for his political career in some fancy hotel in Hanoi. But let's face it, beauty queens do not have a reputation for being very smart or deep. John McCain has issues with women. Maybe it's from his long naval career. Or maybe from his generation, he was born before the baby boom. Who knows? I've met men younger than me who have contempt for women. And women know this, despite the nomination of Sarah Palin to be his Vice President.

And this is the part where the wingnuts start whining about the Clenis. But here's the deal. Bill Clinton actually likes women. His policies while he was in the White House helped women. Even though he was a womanizer, he remained married to the same woman. He listened to the advice of female advisors like Madeline Albright (who was way more effective as Secretary of State than Condoleeza Rice) The right wing echo chamber was mystified as to why President Clinton had the support of organizations like the National Organization of Women and NARAL despite the "bimbo eruptions". It's because his policies (with the exception of welfare reform) helped women. And women were smart enought to know this.

Politicians like John McCain don't get, they think tokenism is the way to win the hearts and minds of women. It isn't. Insulting our intelligence doesn't close the gender gap. But I'm sure it's a winning strategy for the GOP, keep it up.

So McCain picks a woman to be his Veep and now the PUMAs are saying that they are going to vote for the Green Candidate? I saw this in comments on several feminist blogs today.

I guess the GOP realizes that women aren't stupid enough to vote for a woman just because she's a woman. A woman who opposes everything that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (and Geraldine Ferraro) stand for. So now they are promoting the Green Party in the hopes that voting Green will draw enough votes away from Obama and give McCain the victory.

Why not? It worked in 2000. I just want to remind everyone that IT DOES MAKE A BIG FUCKING DIFFERENCE WHO GETS ELECTED PRESIDENT. The GOP is full of batshit crazy idiots who have no business running the country.

So do not be deceived, John McCain hates women. He is a man who verbally abuses his wife. Yes, a man who calls his wife a trollop and cunt is abusive. And that was in public, imagine what he calls her in private. A man who hates half of the population has no business being president.

Yesterday was blog for choice day. I missed it because I'm a busy single mom who has to deal with issues like a leaking toilet and water damage to the ceiling of my living room. (Enough of the excuses!) But this is where my day job gets input into my hobby.

The Anti-Choice movement really hates women. The movement believes that the ends justify the means. There is a reason why 87% of US Counties do not have an abortion provider. A systematic campaign of terrorism against doctors and clinics has been waged by the "pro-life" movement since the 1970's. Abortion clinics today are more secure than military bases in the United States. (O.K., that's hyperbole, but you get the idea.)

But let's face, violence against abortion clinics is violence against women. I know the pro-life infrastructure that aided and abetted the Eric Rudolphs and James Kopps does not like the lifestyle of modern women today. When they talk about "Biblical marriage", they are talking about marriage as slavery for women. They want a legal system where women need the permission of their father/husband/brother to take out a loan/buy a house or a car. A life where women churn out baby after baby, fuck her and the children that she bears if her life is endangered by the pregnancy. And they really hate the fact that women now can have sex without consequences. Yep, that's right, they hate us for our freedom. That's why they come up with the bullshit argument that sex is bad for women. It's total bullshit and women today know that. Which is why they force abstinence only sex education in our schools.

I rather like being a rebellious Jezebel. And if I have a daughter, I might name her Jezebel.

This man crucified Santa Claus. He says he was making a statement about the commercialization of Christmas, not realizing that Christmas has become a secular holiday. Considering that Christmas was a pagan holiday in the first place. I don't understand why people get so angry about it. So, in order to make a statement (about what?), he has traumatized children. Or maybe he thinks Saint Nicolas is the equal of Jesus Christ. I guess he doesn't like kids.

From Feministing, I see that Senator Hilary Clinton reintroduced a bill to give American Servicewomen access to emergency contraception. This also means that the wives and daughters of our servicemen will also have access to EC. This bill will require all DoD health facilities to carry EC. Hopefully, this means that servicewomen will be able to pick up a packet of EC from the Staff Duty NCO if she needs it just like condoms are available at the staff duty desk in some units I was in. (This was really common when I was in Korea. The stories of decadence I could tell you about Korea, but that's another blog entry.) I hope that the female soldier would pick up the condoms before the EC because condoms also protect against STDs.

The reason why EC is a readiness issue is because when a female soldier finds out she is pregnant, she is non-deployable for the length of her pregnancy and for up to six months after she gives birth. A doctor can clear her for deployment sooner if there is a national emergency. (I do not know what the current post-partum rules for deployment are now.)

Not only that, pregnant servicewomen are resented in the military. They are accused of getting pregnant deliberately to get out of deployments. I had a company commander who pulled pregnant females out of their sections to work in the orderly room. These were women who worked in an office with no exposure to hazardous materials. It was like they were being punished for being pregnant. Fortunately, I was in a unit that was much more supportive of me when I was pregnant. However, I suffered from horrible post-partum complications that affected my ability to deploy for nine after my son was born. However, because I had access to a wide variety of birth control options, I was able to plan my pregnancy to happen when I was in a unit that didn't deploy.

It's not that American servicewomen are slutty, it's just they get lots of opportunities to get laid. If you believe that Servicewomen should have another option in their arsenal against unwanted pregnancy, then write your Senator or your Representative and tell him or her to support The Compassionate Care for Servicewomen Act.

It's really to promote a book. But the quiz is cool.

Today is the 231st anniversery of the Declaration of Independence. Our founding fathers declared the 13 colonies independent of Great Britain on this day in history.

I believe the founding fathers would be appalled at the current state of events today. Our defense forces are burned out by a war without end. Religion is steadily creeping back into our governments with the Christianist Taliban trying to impose their religious beliefs on own our private lives. How would the founding fathers feel about the current president commuting the prison sentence of a traitor? Yes, that is what Scooter Libby is, a traitor. Or how would they feel about a Vice President who has declared himself his own branch of government?

I am in Kuwait waiting for my passport and visa to be processed. I will be back in the USA on Saturday morning.

Iraq wasn't that bad, but the place were I was at was called Camp Cupcake by the Marines. There were other places in Iraq that were much worse. The area I was in was very rural and predominantly Sunni. It wasn't like Baghdad which is a huge, multi-ethnic city. I got travel all the western-most part of Anbar province. I even got to go to some places where female marines weren't allowed. The USMC has a very different policy about assigning females to units than the Army does. Female marines are not assigned to brigade level combat arms units. The lowest echelon they are assigned to is division. And when the Marines requested support from the Army, and the Army sent a unit with females in it. The Marines had fits.

And I discovered that the Marines do not let females be HUMINT collectors or CI Agents.

They complain about the Army getting all the funding and the best equipment. But when the Army provides the USMC with that equipment for free, the Marines say, "Oh we won't use that, it's Army equipment."

On, June 14th, the chow hall had a huge cake for the Army birthday, and yes, the Army is the oldest branch of the military. Older than the Navy, and waaay older than the Air Force. But I had Marines telling me that the USMC is older, that they date back to the ancient Spartans.

Ummm, I don't think you really want to emulate the ancient Spartan warriors in this age of "don't ask, don't tell". Much less brag about it.

An open letter to Gayle Haggard

Dear Mrs. Haggard,
First of all, I know what you are going through. My soon to be ex-husband came out of the closet 11 months ago. You probably feel like you have been hit in the face with a cinder block (metaphorically speaking).

The first thing you should do is get tested for every STD known to humanity including HIV. If you ever have sex with your husband again, make him wear a condom. (Actually, that's good advice for someone who has discovered their straight spouse has cheated on them.) I know your church has probably told you that it's a sin to use condoms or they aren't effective in stopping the spread of STD, but medical professionals say otherwise. Who are you going to believe about condoms? A book written by bunch of bronze age nomads before condoms were invented?(paraphrasing Richard Dawkins) Or the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and the Whitman Walker Clinic?

The second thing you should know, being gay in and of itself is not evil. Your husband's dishonesty with himself and you is evil. Homophobia is evil. Homosexuality is not a disease to be cured. Going to spiritual "restoration" will not cure gayness. Geez, that sounds so Soviet, like going to a re-education camp. My S2BX was filled with self-loathing for years, his homosexuality was the invisible elephant in the home. I knew that he was keeping something from me, that there was some element of intimacy that was missing from our marriage, but he wouldn't talk about. Now that he's out, it's like a giant weight has been lifted from his shoulders. Maybe that was the sensation that I got when he told me. The weight left his shoulders and slammed me in the face.

Please re-examine how your religious beliefs have contributed to the closeting of your husband and your current pain. There are an estimated 2 million mixed orientation marriages. About 20% of gay married are married to a woman. The closet is an ugly place to be for both individuals in these marriages. If society accepted gays as they are, a lot of pain and suffering will be averted. If I had known that my S2BX was gay, I never would have married him. I have a feeling that if you had known about your husband's orientation that you would have married someone else.

I understand that you want to try and make the marriage work. Sadly, the divorce rate in mixed orientation marriages is extremely high. Good luck, about 80% of mixed orientation marriages end in divorce. As in most cases of adultery, the wife is the last to know. I wish you luck, the odds are against you.

Remember that you are not alone in this. The are many resources available to support you, the Straight Spouse Network has been an incredible comfort to me. They even have a reading list for spouses. And a reading list for children.

Please, accept the fact that your husband's homosexuality is not your fault. Ignore Mark Driscoll, he's an asshole who twists the Bible to suit his own purposes. You will get through this.

I know I am a stranger trying to tell you how to live your life, however, Evangelical Christians have been trying to tell Americans how to live their lives. I'm just returning the favor.

Busy packing and moving.

O.K. I've been back from lovely Columbus, GA for a week. And no, I didn't get to see the AFLAC duck. I have been busy moving to my new house. I just closed on it yesterday. I will still be in Alexandria, not in Alexandria City but in Fairfax County. I bought a three bedroom, end-unit townhome for under $400K.

I would love to write about how Republicans (especially George Allen) have problems telling fact from fiction. But George Allen is an idiot. Ballot question one is stupid too. I'm so glad that is on the ballot instead of referendums about solving the traffic mess in NoVA.

I know Jim Webb's ex-wife is working to get him elected. So George, where's your ex-wife? Do you really want us to know about why you got divorced?

I would also like to blog about a wingnut who thinks that Baghdad is safer that Washington DC. So that's what's causing all the traffic jams in the DC Metro area. VBIEDs!!! Funny how the local, national and international news media hasn't caught on to it. Especially since they were all over the DC Sniper shootings.

To the editors of the Washington Post:

I really don't care about a politician's wife. I am not voting for her. It really doesn't matter if she's pro-choice if her husband votes away my rights in order to appease the religious right. She's not the one who is going to be representing me in the Senate. It's nice that's she's loyal and will defend him to the death. So's Hilary Rodham Clinton, but Hilary has an identity of her own. Teresa Heinz Kerry had an identity of her own as well, she managed a multi-million dollar foundation. Both of them were smeared because of their independence. Judith Steinberg didn't even bother to change her name when she married her fellow physician Howard Dean. (BTW, where was the outrage about Lynne Cheney working for the American Enterprise Institute? Can you say IOKIYAR?) Wouldn't it have been nice to have a First Lady who actually had a real job? Instead of collecting wingnut welfare like Lynne Cheney?

But we really need to move away from the politician's wife as decorative accessory. It is an anachronism. Real women have careers of their own, the days of a woman making her husband her career are a relic. Women don't go to college to get their MRS degrees, women now outnumber men at colleges. A politician bringing his wife into the spotlight to appeal to women voters is patroning. How stupid does George Allen think women are? Let's dump the wife as a part a candidate's package, this is the 21st Century after all.

It's election season. I got a push poll from an organization calling itself the Family Foundation. It was an automated phone call, I didn't even get to speak to a live person. I would have loved to have told off those fundies who are stupid enough to believe that birth control pills and other forms of family planning are bad for families. Don't get me started on the hysteria that letting two gay men or two lesbians will destroy marriage. So anyhow, they ask me these "family values" questions about gay marriage and abortion. The last question they asked was about giving tax credits to families who send who their children "to the school of their choice". Hmmm, I guess the fundies are giving up on the school vouchers to send their children to Abeka High School and are going for the tax credit. Which is even worse than the vouchers, because it takes tax money away from incoming revenue to the schools (and roads) and creates even larger budget deficits. Yes, the Family Foundation is a bunch of insecure Xristian fundies who think that everything should be their way. And these busybodies are Virginia's affliatiate of Focus on the Family.

How stupid and irrational are the Family Foundation's staff? Well the Fairfax County chapter has issues with the Fairfax County Schoolboard's Family Life Education curriculum. In particular, they object to teaching 5th graders about HIV. We are talking about a suburban area of Washington DC. The metro DC area's HIV infection rate is double the national average. Not teaching children about HIV and how to prevent it is like handing that same 5th grader a loaded handgun with the safety off. Leaving children ignorant about how HIV is transmitted is doing them a great disservice. Especially since half of teenagers in the United States have had oral sex. When is it going to through the thick skulls of these amoral control freaks that ABSTINENCE ONLY SEX EDUCATION DOESN'T WORK!!!

If the Family Foundation wants to keep their children uneducated and unable to cope with the real world that's their business. But keep me and my son out of it.

The WaPo has an article about how Senator Macacawitz now has national visibility. Lately, he has been under scruntiny for his tendency to see non-white people as something less than human. If only his voting record on military and veteran's issues were under the same microscope. I did see that "Vets for Allen" sign on Duke Street in Alexandria. Apparently, the person who posted that sign is truly misinformed about Senator Macacawitz's record. See, Senator Macacawitz is what is commonly known as a chickenhawk. He likes to make meaningless gestures about being patriotic, like protecting the Flag from Desecration but deep down inside he has the same contempt for our fighting forces and veterans as he does for people who are not white, straight, Christian males like him. If you think Jim Webb had issues with women serving in the Armed Forces, Senator Macacawitz voted against allowing abortions in military hospitals. in 2002. That was more than 20 years after Jim Webb's infamous "Annapolis is a horny woman's dream" essay. THINK ABOUT IT you women in Allen's ad!! Yes, chickenhawks don't like women in the military. They whine and complain about how pregnancy interferes with military readiness, but then they won't do anything to help women remain militarily ready. I'm sure Senator Macacawitz would find a way to deny our military women easy access to contraception if he could.

Senator Macacawitz thinks that
tax cuts for the wealthy are more important than financing the War on Terra. He voted against funding veteran's health care, twice in 2005.

And who can forget this classic?

It's a pity that Senator Macacwitz voted against increasing mental health services in the VA Health care system. Obviously, the person who owns the big house with the "Vets for Allen" sign needs it.

Ordinarily, a person's religious beliefs or ethnic background really do not matter in who I decide to vote for. First and foremost I am a liberal. I believe in equal rights and access to education and opportunity for all. I believe the government has a responsibility to keep the economic playing field level. I also believe the government should stay out of people's private decisions as far as life and death decisions go. I would rather vote for an Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) than a Zell Miller (D-Crazyland). The recent revelations about George Allen's maternal family under different circumstances would be no big deal. The family histories of Madeleine Albright, John Kerry and Wesley Clark had no bearing on their performance as a diplomat, Senator or soldier.

However, George Allen has a history of hanging out with white supremecists. You know, the people who think Hitler had good ideas other than the autobahn (which inspired our interstate highway system). He owes his political career to these pariahs of society. George Allen may try to paint himself as a moderate, but the company he keeps says he's not. And that is the issue, pointing out that George Allen's mother is Jewish is not anti-Semitic. Hanging out with the members of an organization whose charter says

"We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called "affirmative action" and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races."

is anti-Semitic.

And I understand that George Allen's mother's family is from Tunisia which is on the African continent. When I see George Allen, I see more self-loathing than at a meeting of Log Cabin Republicans.

From Crankyboy, I find out that technically, George Felix Allen is Jewish. I say technically, because his mother is a Sephardic Jew from North Africa. When he was asked about it in a debate with Jim Webb on WUSA, Felix got really pissy about it. Now, I don't think asking about one's parents religious or ethnic heritage is really relevant to who I vote for, but Felix's reaction was relevant. Can you say self-loathing? (More on that later)

Now, he admits that his mother is Jewish. It also turns out that his grandfather was a member of the Jewish resistance in North Africa during World War II. I wonder how his grandfather would feel about George Allen's infatuation with the Confederate Flag? Or about Felix's refusal to endorse Martin Luther King's birthday as a state holiday. Instead of getting the third Monday in January off, Virginia's civil servants get Jackson-Lee Day instead. (That was the self-loathing part I was talking about.)

Considering his mother's heritage, you have to wonder about George Allen's psychological history.

So what do you say on a day like today? Happy Patriot's Day? Happy is not a word that should go with today.

I remember the day five years ago. I had officially been out of the Army for a week. I turned in my military ID card to the personnel office at NAS Jax the day before. I was going to a job fair that day when I heard the news that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center on the way out the door. I listened to NPR on the way to my father's house to drop off my son so I could find a job and be gainfully employed. The career fair still went on, everyone was huddled around a TV set. There was the usual assortment of employers that had high turnover rates because wages have stagnated and they were thankless jobs like telemarketing and bill collections. I dropped off a few resumes and went home. Traffic at the local Navy base's gate was backed up for miles. I needed to go by the base to get home.

As I was stuck in traffic, I was filled with three emotions: shock, rage, and guilt. Shock because the message traffic I had seen about al-Qaeda's plans to fly airplanes into buildings was too fantastic to believe. It sounded like a plan that had no way of being carried out. Rage that my country had been attacked by a transnational terrorist group that no one in the administration had taken seriously. Guilt because I could have been the one to connect the dots. O.K. so the highest level of counterterrorism analysis I did was for USAREUR in the late 1990's. But still, I felt guilty about it. But I could have been Cassandra, no one would have listened to me.

I actually had respect for the one who should be impeached when he invaded Afghanistan so quickly. That respect returned to pre-9/11 levels when Osama bin Ladin escaped and our attentions were turned to Iraq. So when neo-cons accuse us of pre-9/11 thinking, it was their pet president who let Osama bin Ladin get away. Don't blame us. It was your president who let the man responsible for the murder of 2500+ Americans get away. The terrible events of 9/11 were the best thing that ever happened to George W. Bush (other than being born into the right family). aWol never would have been re-elected without 9/11. aWol's approval ratings soared after 9/11, so why shouldn't he return the favor to the man who saved aWol from one term obscurity? Now aWol will be remembered as the President who got re-elected despite his gross imcompetence.

Terror plot thwarted, I just shit my pants!!

This is not the proper response to a foiled terrorist attack.

24 terrorists are arrested for plotting to blow up passenger airplanes over the Atlantic Ocean. Because the suspects alledgely were going to use liquid explosives, you have to check you personal hygiene supplies. No electronic gadgets or bringing your own drinks on the plane either. And no mascara for you either!! All that you can bring with you on the plane is your medicine and baby formula. Nothing like being on a long international flight with nothing to do and free alcohol. Flight attendants just love bored, scared, and drunk passengers.

Of course you can always bring your nail clippers, box cutters and Swiss army knives. Those haven't been banned again, yet. Good thing flight school dropouts aren't allowed to fly anymore.

This plot is similar to a plot planned by Ramzi Youssef ten years ago. That plot was foiled, yet we didn't go into panic mode. I wonder why? MAYBE BECAUSE THE FUCKING PLOT WAS THWARTED and THERE WAS NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF!!! We knew that terrorists have been wanting to blow up planes using any means possible. So now, another plot has been discovered and the British and American governments go into full panic mode. Terrorists don't need to actually attack a target. They just have to think about it and they achieve the same effect which is to terrorize us.

By the way, Scotland Yard did a great job. They deserve praise for a job well done and understanding how counterterrorism actually works.

UPDATED: The Army has now distanced itself from the idea of a theme park. However, there are still plans for a museum and a hotel at the site. Civilians can still access the museum, but I do see the Department of Defense using the hotel and conference center for conferences. But if the Army did go through with theme park idea, it would have made for some interesting organization days for units in the military district of Washington.

Apparently, the Army is getting out of the war business and into the theme park business. Yes at a time when

adding what county officials call a military theme park arises as about 22,000 employees prepare to be transferred to Fort Belvoir in the next five years because of the federal base realignment and closure recommendations

is going to do so much to improve traffic in the area. I don't think a theme park is going to help real estate values in the area either, they are some of the lowest in Fairfax County now. Theme parks bring in low paying service jobs, not the high tech jobs offered by government contractors now. And who wants to live next to Disney world anyways?

I know the Army is having problems paying its bills and getting good employees, but I don't think a theme park is going to solve those problems. If you want to solve the Army's problems, get rid of the corrupt Republicans in Congress right now, then impeach the Chimperor and his henchman too.

UPDATED: Check out the cheese factor on the design. The museum is shaped like a Congressional Medal of Honor. Not that any of the chickenhawks who control all three branches of the government would know what a CMH is.

The WaPo has a story about gays cutting and running from Virginia because of the Commonwealth's laws concerning gay couples and domestic partnerships. The article is vague, no specific numbers. It's just a bunch of hearsay that would not stand up in any academic paper or court of law. Currently, Virginia law does not recognize the rights of gay couples as far as joint ownership of property, parenthood, and medical decisions. There is also an amendment on the ballot to amend Virginia's constitution to make the anti-gay laws "constitutional". This law will also take away the rights of unmarried straight couples as well. It's nice to know what the priorities of our elected representatives are.

So gays living in Virginia are leaving. So how many gays are staying? And fighting? Do the gays who are leaving Virginia realize that their rights can be taken away from them just as easily in Maryland or Massachusetts? Why should gays have different rights in different states. We are seeing the re-institution of Jim Crow laws by sexual orientation, rather than race. Why are they letting the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells and their bigoted followers chase them out the Commonwealth? By leaving, they are letting the bigots win. Just as the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's changed America's beliefs about race, a new Civil Rights movement about Gay rights will change America's beliefs about homosexuals. Virginians need to tell their neighbors that this is intolerable. Gays have a right to live in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Gays should have the right to marry and have families. And no one has come up with a valid reason how allowing gays to marry will destroy the institution of marriage. Do the bigots think that gays should marry straights? If you think the divorce rate among straight couples is bad, the divorce rate in mixed orientation marriages is about 66%.

Aha! I think I know how gays will destroy marriage. They will marry straight people and have emotionally and sexually unsatisfying marriages where only one partner really knows what is going on. I found another page of the "gay agenda to destroy marriage".

Ummm, what important tools in the war on terror would the Democrats like to surrender? Invading the wrong fucking country in order to resolve an Oedipus complex? Letting Osama bin Ladin get away? Letting Americans die in the streets of an American city after a natural disaster?

Geez, the only reason why Ken Mehlman speaks to Republicans on these issues is that they're the only ones who won't laugh in his face when he says stupid things like:

Mehlman said that if the Democrats win control of Congress in the Nov. 7 midterm elections, party leaders will stop the National Security Agency from eavesdropping on foreign terrorists and will pursue impeachment of the president.

Did Ken Mehlman just say if you want George W. Bush to be impeached, vote for a Democrat?? I think that's the best advice coming from the GOP EVER! Way better than the advice for the Dems to move to the Right. I think the GOP is shooting itself in the foot. Please keep telling members of the press that having the Democrats take over Congress is a bad thing that will lead to balanced budgets, a sensible solution to the war on terror, an end to welfare for rich kids, a government that responds to natural disasters and impeachment for the Worst.President.Ever.

The first in a series of what went wrong in Iraq. It looks like it's going to be a really good series of articles. Apparently, the Army thought Iraq was going to be another Bosnia or Kosovo. The only problem is that in the Balkans, all the parties involved were bled dry and exhausted. The local military age men were either killed or burned out by 4+ years of war. The Balkans also had more of a Western outlook (yes, I know they were communists but remember Marxism is a Western philosophy that was born of the Enlightenment) than the Iraqis or the Vietnamese. That was not the situation in Iraq. Actually, I think the situation is more like the German invasion of France during WWII (no, I am not comparing our soldiers to stormtroopers) than the Balkans.

I think these are some of the more telling quotes of the political leadership:

Complicating the U.S. effort was the difficulty top officials had in recognizing what was going on in Iraq. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld at first was dismissive of the looting that followed the U.S. arrival and then for months refused to recognize that an insurgency was breaking out there. A reporter pressed him one day that summer: Aren't you facing a guerrilla war?

"I guess the reason I don't use the phrase 'guerrilla war' is because there isn't one," Rumsfeld responded.

That summer, retired Marine Col. Gary Anderson, an expert in small wars, was sent to Baghdad by the Pentagon to advise on how to better put down the emerging insurgency. He met with Bremer in early July. "Mr. Ambassador, here are some programs that worked in Vietnam," Anderson said.

The Washington Post runs this editorial from the crackpots at the "Family Research Council". Realizing that opposing the HPV (cervical cancer) vaccine because it promotes sluttines was a bad idea and alienated the mainstream Americans. They have started a disinformation campaign that the HPV vaccine is not 100% in preventing cervical cancer, so your preteen daughter shouldn't get vaccinated. It is true that Gardisil only targets the viruses that cause 70% of cervical cancers. But the vaccine combined with consistent condom use can make HPV an extremely rare STD. Not only that, a substance in carageenan has been found to kill HPV in the test tube. Carageenan is used in some sexual lubricants.

The FRC is all up in arms about the 30% of HPV infections that aren't covered by the vaccine, but safe sex practices like using a condom will stop the transmission of those viruses. Of course the FRC's editorial doesn't say anything about that. If the FRC wanted to truly inform the public about preventing the remaining 30% of HPV, they would write in their editorial that condoms help prevent the spread of HPV. But nooo, they want to stop a woman from having sex, instead of truly protecting her health. Yes, they want to micromanage the sex lives of women they do not know.

How effective are these disinformation campaigns? Can you get Plan B over the counter in the United States? Will your family doctor write a prescription for it? Does your local pharmacy stock it?

Here's the difference between Hungary's transition to democracy and Iraq - the Democratic Evolution was the result of internal changes in Hungarian society. Democracy was not forced upon Hungary the way the United States is trying to fit the model of Western Democracy upon Iraq. The Soviet Union invaded Hungary because it wanted to impose its vision of a communist government upon the Hungarians. Can you see the similarities? Bigger more powerful state wants to impose its view of the world on a smaller weaker state. However, I do have to admit the Soviet Union was more successful at stablizing Hungary then the United States is at stabilizing Iraq.

Let's see. We have a government dominated by one political party, with the goal of a "permenent Republican majority". Back in November, Linda Hirschman wrote an article in the American Prospect about how self-destructive that being a stay-at-home mother with a graduate degree was. What she didn't expect was the wrath of the wingnuts. Yes, we are beginning to see a theme here. Do not suggest that there is an alternative to their morals (which they want to impose on everyone) or they will bring the Wrath of God upon you. I know the wingnuts think that God speaks to them, I really think they should see a psychiatrist about those voices in their heads. Apparently, God is telling everyone except me that women should be married, subservient, pregnant and in the home. He tells Osama bin Ladin and Pat Robertson this, God forgot to give me the memo.

I learned something people really need to know. The aggressive domesticity is not coming only from a bunch of women who can't manage all the demands on their time. Time and again, when I could identify the sources of the most rabid criticism and Google them, male and female, they had fundamentalist religious stuff on their Web sites or in the involuntary biographies that Google makes possible. A lot of the fundamentalism behind the stay-at-home mom movement is overt, such as the letters worrying about my soul that appeared after the head of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary suggested his followers chat me up. But a lot of it is covert, such as the identity of the authors of manuals disguised as tips on frugal housekeeping, but actually proselytizing women to stay home, as the Bible suggests.

Yes, because working mothers were an issue so important to Jesus that he mentioned it zero times just like abortion and homosexuality. And don't hand me that crap that women didn't work 2,000 years ago. Women were the main herders in the Bedouin culture until very recently. Priscilla from the New Testament was a tentmaker. Deborah was a judge. It's amazing that religious leaders interpret their religion to work out to their advantage so they can get a free domestic slave. Let's see if your wife doesn't work, you don't have to pay for daycare and you don't have to help out around the house because that's her full time job.

What happens to the smug stay at home mom when her husband divorces her or dies? Divorce is particularly devasting to a stay at home mom. It's tough to get a job when you have been out of the workplace for years. Unless she has a solid pre-nupital agreement, there is no divorce insurance. She is cut off from her husband's pension and life insurance. Alimony is now a relic of the past. What's the best way to protect yourself from this problem? Don't quit your job when you have kids.

Larry Johnson gave the wingnuts a taste of their own medicine. WHAT A BITTER PILL IT WAS!! What did Larry have to say about Karl Rove?

"Leave it to the Porcine Draft Dodger--Karl Rove--to impugn the character of combat veterans. Can't blame him for trotting out the same playbook that worked so well in 2004 against the candidacy of John Kerry. If it worked once it should work again.

Of course I am referring to Karl's speech Tuesday night to Republicans in New Hampshire. According to a piece in Wednesday's Washington Post:

In a speech to New Hampshire Republican officials here Monday night, the White House deputy chief of staff attacked Democrats who have criticized the U.S. war effort in Iraq, such as Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.) and Rep. John P. Murtha (Pa.), who he said advocate "cutting and running."

"They may be with you for the first shots," Rove said of such opponents. "But they're not going . . . to be with you for the tough battles."

Karl is a shameless bastard. This could explain why his mother killed herself. Once she discovered what a despicable soul she had spawned she apparently saw no other way out. It would be one thing if his vile tactics were simply mere smears of politicians like Kerry and Murtha. They are big boys and should be able to defend themselves quite ably against this turd. But Rove, like Josef Goebbels, has used fear and smear as his primary tools to keep George Bush in power."

Cue the whining of a 1,000 wingnuts. Apparently, they are the only ones allowed to say nasty things about their opponets. Immediately they jumped on Larry for the suicide remarks. There are two facts:
1. Karl Rove's mother committed suicide.
2. Karl Rove is a loathsome person who has no moral compass. He lied about his status as a college student to avoid military service in Viet Nam. He never met a veteran he didn't like to smear including John McCain.
Gee, maybe #1 has something to do with #2.
Now let's looks at Larry Johnson's career. He worked at the CIA, which means he had to have a Top Secret Clearance with some type of Lifestyle Polygraph. Now I remember from my security manager days from when I was in the Army, they don't give out security clearances to anyone with a background of lies and treachery. If Larry did what we think Karl Rove did in the Valerie Wilson case, Larry would go to jail for a very long time. Someone who lies to the government for their own advantage would not be eligible for a clearance. And yes, the background investigations are thorough. However, the rules for political appointees are different for political appointees. So as an analyst Larry put 2+2=Karl Rove had something to do with his mother's suicide. I really do think the person with the integrity problem is Karl Rove. But the wingnuts didn't like having that pointed out to them.

Which brings us to education. When conservatives say they need to cut the bureaucracy of the school system, they are talking about eliminating the librarian, the reading specialist, the school nurse, the music teacher, and the physical education teacher. All of whom are very important to a child's education. Yeah, I hated PE, but when childhood obesity is at epidemic levels, kids need exercise. And music!! I just found out my son can sing. He didn't inherit his parents' tone deafness. And don't get me started on the challenges to science in the classroom where ~~Islamic~~Christian fundalmentalists want to teach your children conflicting myths over biology. Or when it comes to sex education that telling kids that abstinence is the only way to go. Conservatives live in a fantasy world where teenagers don't lie about sexual activity to their parents, teachers or peers. BTW, abstinence only sex ed only leads to more unplanned pregnancies and abortions, just like denying prescriptions for emergency contraceptives to desperate women who were playing by the rules.

I just saw An Inconvenient Truth with my son. You must go see it. It is an amazing movie that explains the dangers of global warming if we (as Americans) do not change our ways. Millions of people will be displaced if we don't. What happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is only the warm up (pun intended) to the displacement of millions of Americans. Imagine a United States without a Miami, Tampa, New Orleans, Mobile, Alabama, San Francisco or New York City when sea level raises 20 feet. It's not only Americans who will suffer, millions of people around the world will be displaced.

And if that doesn't bother you, THINK ABOUT THIS: OUR PLANET WILL BE UNINHABITABLE IN 100 FUCKING YEARS.
If you see one movie this summer this must be it. And then promise your children that you will keep the world safe for them.

Oh, and you will really be pissed off that the Supreme Court put that usurper aWol in the White House instead of letting the recount in Florida finish and put the rightful president in place.

Then tell me what solutions the Republicans propose other than tax cuts. Despite what Ken Mehlman will tell you, the Republicans are not the party of new ideas. That tax cut idea dates back to Reagan, in other words, the GOP is so 20 years ago.

Relief for Indonesia

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia has killed about 5,000 people. It's really a shame that so many died because most of those deaths were preventable. I was living in Lacey, WA when the Nisqually Earthquake hit in 2001, no one died directly as a result of that earthquake and it was a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. Compared with 1994 Northridge Earthquake, 57 people died. Northridge was a 6.7 earthquake.

Obviously, levels of development in earthquake prone areas contribute to the survivability of a major earthquake. Thankfully, the relief infrastructure that was set up after the Christmas Tsunami is still in place. However, they need your help.

The NYTimes runs a puff piece about the possibility of a third member of the Bush family running for president. For the love of America, I say STOP IT, JUST STOP IT! We do not need another idiot from this dysfunctional family running the United States. aWol destroyed everything that Bill Clinton did to repair the damage to the USA that Poopy did. Lizzy Bummer thinks that skipping four years will let our memories fade about what an unpopular president aWol is.

Homeowners in Arlington are at it again, homeowners are taking advantage of tax credits and figured out a lower their energy costs and greenhouse emmissions by installing solar panels on their house. They're not the only tree-huggers in Arlington (which is a very urban area) the Pentagon also runs on solar power. You can see the Pentagon's solar panels as you are driving south on I-395 just as you get off the 14th Street Bridge. (One of these days I will post a picture of it, just to prove to Bryan it is not an antenna array. ;)

So the names and social security numbers of millions of veterans (including mine) were missing for 13 days before the Secretary of Veteran's Affairs was notified. And how much longer was it before the public knew? That's how I found out, I didn't get a letter or a phone call to notify me that my identity may have been compromised. Noooo, I had to find out Monday morning when the clock radio went off in the morning and the local NPR station told me. Now I find out that my information had been missing for at least two weeks. Geez, you can't trust this administation with anything.

If you are post Viet Nam War veteran, chances are your identity has been compromised. Eauifax has website set up to help vets protect themselves. Transunion has one as well. Just go to one of the three major credit reporting bureaus and get a fraud alert put on your credit report. You can also request a free credit report to verify that all the information on it is accurate.

I think Tim Bono needs to re-read his Gospels. Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. (Nor did he say anything about abortion for that matter.) But Tim Bono (obiviously no relation to Chastity Bono) thinks that his religion justifies him being a bigot and he can deny customer service to someone. I have news for you Mr Bono, bigotry is not a good business plan. And bigotry does run counter to Christian values. See the Bible mentions homosexuality about three times, it addresses taking care of the poor more than a thousand times. Which do you think is God's higher priority?

But take a look at their client list. The company won't replicate film from a 36 year old gay pride parade but their client list includes KD Lang, Ralph Lauren, Elizabeth Taylor, Tommy Hilfiger, the Jimmy Carter Library, and MTV. All of whom, I'm sure would be thrilled to learn about the owner's little snit of bigotry against one person.

There has been a lot of furor over the intelligence community collecting information on US Persons, one controversery has been over the TALON reports. Believe it or not, TALONs are very boring. I use to read them on a daily basis, trust me, they are not worth the scandal. Most of the reports have to do with some poor schmuck getting lost on a military base. Or some idiot trying to get on a military base without the proper identification. The reports are pound-your-head-on-the-desk boring. Well, it turns out that Michelle Malkin got lost on Ft. Meade while visiting the National Cryptologic Museum. I've always wondered what you happen if someone treated her as she wants liberals, immigrants and Muslims to be treated. Apparently, she enjoys it. I wonder how she will feel when that report of her being pulled over by security at NSA turns up at an analyst's desk at CIFA or DHS. Michelle Malkin's family is from the Phillipines where there are two Islamist terrorist groups, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (google the acronym "MILF", I dare you) and the Abu Sayyaf Group. Is she really a batshit, crazy wingnut? Or is she really an operative for the MILF (get your mind out the gutter, not that kind of MILF) or Abu Sayyaf? Or is she a spy like Leandro Aragoncillo?

Think about it. The perfect cover for a spy would be a uber-patriotic, right-wing person, just like Robert Hanssen and Katrina Leung.

Great news! Merck's human papilloma virus vaccine just passed the FDA's advisory committee. It was a unanimous vote by the committee. The vaccine has not been without controversy. Some wingnuts believe that the vaccine will magically turn young girls into sluts. But then they believe teenagers aren't interested in sex unless we tell them what it is. I believe that any vaccine that prevents another woman going through a LEEP procedure is worth $500. Considering the double standard between erectile dysfunction drugs and contraceptives, expect to pay for it out of pocket.

Provided the FDA approves the vaccine. There's a reason why Plan B is not available over the counter in the United States. The FDA doesn't always follow the recommendations of the advisory panel.
