Showing NTOdd some love
NTodd is having a NToddathon in an effort to get not quite half a million hits by his blogerversery.
I just hope NTodd returns the favor, I'm about 275 short of 10,000 hits. ;)
And my blogaversery is coming up too.

Democrats do have ideas and solutions
Just read Hilary Clinton's speech about energy and come back and tell me that the Democrats don't have ideas about how to run the country. Then tell me what solutions the Republicans propose other than tax cuts. Despite what Ken Mehlman will tell you, the Republicans are not the party of new ideas. That tax cut idea dates back to Reagan, in other words, the GOP is so 20 years ago.
Relief for Indonesia
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia has killed about 5,000 people. It's really a shame that so many died because most of those deaths were preventable. I was living in Lacey, WA when the Nisqually Earthquake hit in 2001, no one died directly as a result of that earthquake and it was a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. Compared with 1994 Northridge Earthquake, 57 people died. Northridge was a 6.7 earthquake.
Obviously, levels of development in earthquake prone areas contribute to the survivability of a major earthquake. Thankfully, the relief infrastructure that was set up after the Christmas Tsunami is still in place. However, they need your help.

JEB! for prez, NFW!
The NYTimes runs a puff piece about the possibility of a third member of the Bush family running for president. For the love of America, I say STOP IT, JUST STOP IT! We do not need another idiot from this dysfunctional family running the United States. aWol destroyed everything that Bill Clinton did to repair the damage to the USA that Poopy did. Lizzy Bummer thinks that skipping four years will let our memories fade about what an unpopular president aWol is.
"But Republican Party leaders continue to talk seriously about a continuation of the dynasty, a Bush III administration, with Jeb as a candidate in 2012 or 2016, when the memory of the current president's dismal poll ratings will be less of a factor. That, at least, is what happened the last time around: President George Bush's unpopularity at the end of his term in 1992 did not hurt his eldest son when he ran for president eight years later."
Um yeah, hello!! aWol lost the fricking popular vote in 2000. It took a Supreme Court decision to install aWol as president. Talk about activist judges, oh that's right, wingnuts only hate "activist judges" when they extend self determination rights to women over their bodies and homosexuals who want to legally marry.
And don't get me started on Florida's crappy public schools.
And how will the wingnuts tough stands on immigration fly with a presidential candidate who has a Mexican born wife? For some reason, that probably won't matter. Just like aWol's draft dodging suddenly wasn't the issue it was for the Clenis, I guess it doesn't matter if you are a Bush. It's o.k. if you are a Bush - IOKIYOB

What's the matter with Arlington?
Homeowners in Arlington are at it again, homeowners are taking advantage of tax credits and figured out a lower their energy costs and greenhouse emmissions by installing solar panels on their house. They're not the only tree-huggers in Arlington (which is a very urban area) the Pentagon also runs on solar power. You can see the Pentagon's solar panels as you are driving south on I-395 just as you get off the 14th Street Bridge. (One of these days I will post a picture of it, just to prove to Bryan it is not an antenna array. ;)
So the names and social security numbers of millions of veterans (including mine) were missing for 13 days before the Secretary of Veteran's Affairs was notified. And how much longer was it before the public knew? That's how I found out, I didn't get a letter or a phone call to notify me that my identity may have been compromised. Noooo, I had to find out Monday morning when the clock radio went off in the morning and the local NPR station told me. Now I find out that my information had been missing for at least two weeks. Geez, you can't trust this administation with anything.
If you are post Viet Nam War veteran, chances are your identity has been compromised. Eauifax has website set up to help vets protect themselves. Transunion has one as well. Just go to one of the three major credit reporting bureaus and get a fraud alert put on your credit report. You can also request a free credit report to verify that all the information on it is accurate.
Boo f*cking hoo
I think Tim Bono needs to re-read his Gospels. Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. (Nor did he say anything about abortion for that matter.) But Tim Bono (obiviously no relation to Chastity Bono) thinks that his religion justifies him being a bigot and he can deny customer service to someone. I have news for you Mr Bono, bigotry is not a good business plan. And bigotry does run counter to Christian values. See the Bible mentions homosexuality about three times, it addresses taking care of the poor more than a thousand times. Which do you think is God's higher priority?
But take a look at their client list. The company won't replicate film from a 36 year old gay pride parade but their client list includes KD Lang, Ralph Lauren, Elizabeth Taylor, Tommy Hilfiger, the Jimmy Carter Library, and MTV. All of whom, I'm sure would be thrilled to learn about the owner's little snit of bigotry against one person.

So why the government spying on Michelle Malkin?
There has been a lot of furor over the intelligence community collecting information on US Persons, one controversery has been over the TALON reports. Believe it or not, TALONs are very boring. I use to read them on a daily basis, trust me, they are not worth the scandal. Most of the reports have to do with some poor schmuck getting lost on a military base. Or some idiot trying to get on a military base without the proper identification. The reports are pound-your-head-on-the-desk boring. Well, it turns out that Michelle Malkin got lost on Ft. Meade while visiting the National Cryptologic Museum. I've always wondered what you happen if someone treated her as she wants liberals, immigrants and Muslims to be treated. Apparently, she enjoys it. I wonder how she will feel when that report of her being pulled over by security at NSA turns up at an analyst's desk at CIFA or DHS. Michelle Malkin's family is from the Phillipines where there are two Islamist terrorist groups, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (google the acronym "MILF", I dare you) and the Abu Sayyaf Group. Is she really a batshit, crazy wingnut? Or is she really an operative for the MILF (get your mind out the gutter, not that kind of MILF) or Abu Sayyaf? Or is she a spy like Leandro Aragoncillo?
Think about it. The perfect cover for a spy would be a uber-patriotic, right-wing person, just like Robert Hanssen and Katrina Leung.
Hat tips to TBogg, Sailerfraud, The Liberal Avenger and Malkin(s)watch.

Will Gardisil be another Plan B?
Great news! Merck's human papilloma virus vaccine just passed the FDA's advisory committee. It was a unanimous vote by the committee. The vaccine has not been without controversy. Some wingnuts believe that the vaccine will magically turn young girls into sluts. But then they believe teenagers aren't interested in sex unless we tell them what it is. I believe that any vaccine that prevents another woman going through a LEEP procedure is worth $500. Considering the double standard between erectile dysfunction drugs and contraceptives, expect to pay for it out of pocket.
Provided the FDA approves the vaccine. There's a reason why Plan B is not available over the counter in the United States. The FDA doesn't always follow the recommendations of the advisory panel.

My son and I were looking at movie previews online, and the movie he wants to see most this summer is
Go figure, I'm raising my son to be a tree-hugger. I think he might like Over the Hedge too. After all, it's about suburban encroachment into wilderness areas.
But he's really, really worried about his grandparents' and aunt's house being flooded out if the ice caps melts.

Happy Mother's Day
Today is Mother's Day a holiday originally started as a feminist holiday. It also started as a quest to end war. Julia Ward Howe (of Battlehymn of the Republic fame) issued this proclaimation:
Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of fears!
Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
"Our husbands shall not come to us reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
"Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience.
"We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."
From the bosom of the devasted earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!"
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice! Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace,
And each bearing after her own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God.
So we need to spend this day remembering the Mothers who lost sons and daughters to war. We also need to remember the Mothers who are currently deployed to Iraq and pray that they safely return home to their children.
Who are the real traitors?
If you really want to be depressed about Al Gore not being our President, read this. Of course it's not Frank Rich's column. That guy really didn't cut and paste a NYTimes Select column in his blog. He paraphrased it....really.
It looks like the copyright police are coming to get me ;)

Well, SNL's opening skit was kind of a downer. It was about parallel universes and President Al Gore was addressing the nation in one of them.

Liberals are out of touch with the mainstream? Hah! Conservatives are out of touch with reality.
Yes, conservatives are out of touch with reality. From believing that Plan B and vaccines against STDs promote sluttiness. To thinking tax cuts cure everything. And protecting the interests of rapists and pedophiles. They have the nerve to say that liberals are out of the mainstream of American thought. Until recently, the media has taken the GooPers word that liberals are "out of touch with the mainstream" and that liberals don't know what Americans want. Yet, if Republicans actually ran on the issues that Americans really care about like fiscal responsibility education and health care, they would lose big time. Why? Because the Republicans really aren't in touch with American values. The mainstream media is finally catching on. So what is the GooPers grand strategy to maintain their majority this year? Fear of a Democratic controlled Congress. Yeah, the only problem with that strategy is, most recent polling indicates that Americans want the Democrats to control Congress. That's as good as all the unwanted advice after 2002 and 2004 saying the Dems weren't conservative enough.
I guess that's what happens when you create your own reality.
Jeb Bush for Prez - No Fucking Way!!!
For the love of the USA I think two Bushes in the White House are enough. Boy, W really is clueless if he thinks that the United States wants another member of his family to be President. That must be one inpenetrable bubble W surrounds himself with. But then, I've heard Jeb! is actually the smart one.
Wednesday night catblogging
Taken with a LG CU200 cell phone camera.
Last night when BooBoo and I got home, I opened the sliding glass door to let some fresh air into the apartment. A bird flew in without me noticing it. BooBoo runs into the living room as I'm checking my e-mail saying, "Lee caught a bird in your bedroom". Then the cat runs into the living room with an English sparrow in his mouth and drops it in the dining area. The bird is now lying on its side stunned and breathing heavily and is probably in shock. Boo wants to pick up the bird and set it free, I think the bird is going to die and I tell Boo that the best thing to do is to let the bird die and keep it away from the cat. Lee is now pacing around the bird waiting for it to die too. Now Boo is really upset and is crying about how the cat is working against mother nature. I tell Boo that cats do hunt small animals and sometimes eat them, so Lee is doing what he does best which is being a cat. Meanwhile, the cat is getting impatient and pounces on the dying bird. Somehow the bird escapes and flies into my bedroom again. All three of us run after the bird. Instead of flying into the mirror where the cat caught it, he flies into my bedroom window. The shocked and traumatized bird keeps flying into the glass. BooBoo is trying to coax the bird onto his finger so he can let it go out on the balcony, Lee is trying to catch the bird to play with it (to death), and I'm trying to get the screen out of the window so the bird can fly out. I pick up the cat and hand him to Boo and tell Boo to take the cat out of the bedroom and close the door. Now the cat is out of the way, I can get the bird out of the apartment. The bird is taking a "breather" while I get the screen out of the way so it can escape. I get the screen out of the window and shoo the bird out. It flies away, hopefully to die a peaceful death. I really do not think the bird would have lived much longer if it had not been freed.
I have not seen Lee catch anything since BooBoo was born. I didn't know my 11-year-old cat still had it in him to catch small animals. Especially something as agile as a bird. And he caught it without knocking anything off my dresser, impressive.

"Confident Democrats", I like the sound of that!
The WaPo has an article with Nancy Pelosi stating what the Dems' plans are after they take back Congress. The first priority will be investigations into the Bush administration's misdeeds. It will be nice having a woman as Speaker of the House. And maybe, if the President and Vice President are impeached and removed from office, say hello to Madame President Pelosi.
Now the plan includes,
a Democratic House would quickly vote to raise the minimum wage for the first time since 1997. It would roll back a provision in the Republicans' Medicare prescription drug benefit that prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services from negotiating prices for drugs offered under the program. Now the GOP is spinning this as demagoguery. Only a Republican would think slandering someone's patriotism is reasoned debate on the issues and common sense is demagoguery. The GOP says the Democrats are out of touch with the mainstream. Well, the Republicans are really out of touch with reality.
It would vote to fully implement the recommendations of the bipartisan panel convened to shore up homeland security after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Democratic leaders said.
And it would reinstate lapsed rules that say any tax cuts or spending increases have to be offset by spending cuts or tax increases to prevent the federal deficit from growing.
Even the man who thought of the Southern Strategy thinks it's too little too late to rescue the Republicans now. I guess race and gender demagoguery and going after the angry white guy is not a long term strategy in the long term.
Momma's got a new set of wheels
I did it. I bought a VW Jetta TDI. It has a diesel engine, manual transmission, satellite radio. It has the features of a luxury car. So far I have gotten 40 miles to the gallon. Who needs a hybrid that runs on ordinary gasoline?
Did you know that the diesel engine was originally developed to run on peanut oil? Biodiesel is not old french fry grease. It does have to be refined and the glycerin must be removed by transesterification. Basically, the ingredients are vegetable fat, lye, and alcohol. Ironically, the closest biodiesel retailer to my area is at a Citgo station at the Pentagon. But if you drive on I-395 South from Washington DC, you will see the Pentagon's solar farm on the right. Why is the Department of Defense so defiant of the administration and its special interest groups? And does FauxNews know about this?
